Lincoln Tunnel NJ Traffic Control for Super Bowl XLVIII
Heritage Industrial Services, Inc. (Heritage), a nationwide rigging and dismantling contractor, performed rigging and installation of traffic control at the Lincoln Tunnel to prepare for Super Bowl XLVIII.
THE CHALLENGE
The scope of this project included:
- Installing new signage to address unexpected traffic snarls and the anticipated congestion during the weeks leading up to Super Bowl 2014
- Managing traffic for an expected 400,000 tourists converging in New York/New Jersey during Super Bowl week and 82,000 attendees traveling to MetLife Stadium on game day
- Completing the installation under a tight schedule while maintaining an excellent safety record
- Performing the work exclusively at night to avoid disrupting the heavy daily traffic volumes in the Lincoln Tunnel
- Implementing comprehensive Department of Transportation nighttime safety precautions, including lighting, cones, reflective materials, warning lights, and flaggers
THE EXECUTION
Heritage first set up lane closures using cones and traffic control vehicles. The four-person crew then utilized a 10K Lull, a 30 ft scissor lift, a 60 ft JLG articulated man lift, and various rigging equipment to remove existing signs and install replacement signs. They completed the entire project safely and within three months, finishing work each night before the early morning rush hour.
